Sounds of Starkenburg Holiday Concert

The sounds of the historical Pfeffer pipe organ, a solo mezzo-soprano voice, and brass handbells will fill the St. Martin Church Museum in Starkenburg for two performances of a Holiday Concert on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Performances will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The concert highlights music of the Advent and the Christmas seasons, and will be offered free to the public. Barry Bierwirth, a Hermann native and noted musician in St. Louis, will work the foot pedals and keys of the Pfeffer pipe organ to bring out the most beautiful songs, getting everyone into the Advent spirit.

Joining him in this Holiday Concert will be the St. Paul United Church of Christ Handbell Choir of Hermann. The 14-member choir plays four octaves of handbells and three octaves of hand chimes. Other percussion instruments will be used during the concert to enhance a variety of musical selections and techniques.

Returning home will be Mrs. Carrie Kirchhofer Tilly, who will perform several solos to well-known songs of the Advent and Christmas seasons. A Hermann native, Mrs. Tilly continues to be involved in music with theater groups in Peoria, Ill., where she and her family now reside.

The acoustics and setting of the historical St. Martin Church Museum - built mostly by immigrants from Bavaria and their descendents, and restored to how it looked in about 1900 - provides a venue that will be sure to put the audience into the spirit of Advent and Christmas.

St. Martin Church Museum is located 2 miles north of Highway 94, at Rhineland, on Highway P. The building is handicap-accessible.
